Holden was established in 1741, and is located in Worcester County.  Its parent town was Worcester.  It is the "parent" of two towns:  Paxton (1804) and West Boylston (1808).  It had boundary adjustments with Paxton in 1831 and 1838.

Holden is bordered on the northwest by Princeton and Rutland; on the southwest by Paxton; on the southeast by Worcester; and on the east by West Boylston and Sterling.
