South Hadley was established in 1753, and is located in Hampshire County.  Its parent town was Hadley, from which it received land in 1753.  In 1768, the town of Granby was created from South Hadley, and in 1792 more land was transferred from South Hadley to Granby.

South Hadley is bordered on the north by Hadley; on the west by Holyoke; on the south by Chicopee; and on the east by Granby.

It is the home of Mount Holyoke College.
