Hadley was established in 1661, and is located in Hampshire County.  It is the "parent" of three towns:  Hatfield (1670); South Hadley (1753) and Amherst (1759).  Also, portions of Hadley were transferred to Amherst in 1789, 1811, 1812, and 1814; boundaries were adjusted with Amherst in 1814; and land was tranferred to Northampton in 1850.

Hadley is bordered on the north by Sunderland; on the northwest by Whately; on the west by Hatfield and Northampton; on the southwest by Easthampton and Holyoke; on the south by South Hadley; on the southeast by Granby; and on the east by Amherst.
