Monson was established in 1760, and is located in Hampden County.  Its parent town was Brimfield.  It traded land with Palmer in 1828.

Monson is bordered on the west by Hampden and Wilbraham; on the north by Palmer; on the east by Brimfield and Wales; and on the south by Stafford, Conn.

It was the home of Monson Academy (1804-1971), which in 1971 merged with Wilbraham Academy to form Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Wilbraham, Mass.
