Northampton was established in 1654, and is located in Hampshire County.  It is the "parent" of three towns:  Southampton (1753), Westhampton (1778), and Easthampton (1785).  It gained land from Hadley in 1850 and gave land to Holyoke in 1909.

Northampton is bordered on the north by Williamsburg; on the northeast by Hatfield; on the east by Hadley; on the south by Easthampton; and on the west by Westhampton.

It is the home of Smith College.
