It is the home of Amherst College and of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, née Massachusetts Agricultural College.

Since every student in the Amherst College Biographical Record has obviously spent time at Amherst, hence has been in the town of Amherst, it would be pointless to list all alumni who have spent time in the town.  So, the listing above is of all students who have spent time in Amherst, Massachusetts, other than time attending the College (as a student) or receiving a degree(s) there.
