Andover was established in 1646, and is located in Essex County.  It is the "parent" of three towns:  Middleton (1728), Lawrence (1847), and North Andover (1855).  It traded land with Tewksbury in 1903.

Andover is bordered on the north by Methuen and Lawrence; on the northwest by Dracut; on the southwest by Tewksbury; on the south by Wilmington; on the southeast by North Reading; and on the east by North Andover.

It is the home of Phillips Academy Andover and the former home of Andover Theological Seminary (1808-1908; now removed to Cambridge and affiliated with Harvard).

Andover contains Ballard Vale (Ballardvale).
